Atomic structure solution of the complex quasicrystal approximant Al77Rh15Ru8 from electron diffraction data

The crystal structure of the novel Al77Rh15Ru8phase (which is an approximant of decagonal quasicrystals) was determined using modern direct methods (MDM) applied to automated electron diffraction tomography (ADT) data. The Al77Rh15Ru8E-phase is orthorhombic [Pbma,a= 23.40 (5),b= 16.20 (4) andc= 20.00 (5) Å] and has one of the most complicated intermetallic structures solved solely by electron diffraction methods. Its structural model consists of 78 unique atomic positions in the unit cell (19 Rh/Ru and 59 Al). Magnetic dichroism in photoemission with unpolarized light.

A magnetic dichroism in photoemission from ferromagnets induced by unpolarized light is observed for the first time in the valence band region as well as for surface states. The study was carried out with magnetized Fe(110), Co(0001), and Gd(0001) films grown epitaxially on W(110). This phenomenon leads to an intensity asymmetry for opposite directions of the sample magnetization. It can be easily used for a routine laboratory diagnostic of magnetic behavior. A simple theoretical interpretation of the phenomenon based on the atomic model is given.

Atomic structure of the major capsid protein of rotavirus: implications for the architecture of the virion

The structural protein VP6 of rotavirus, an important pathogen responsible for severe gastroenteritis in children, forms the middle layer in the triple-layered viral capsid. Here we present the crystal structure of VP6 determined to 2 A resolution and describe its interactions with other capsid proteins by fitting the atomic model into electron cryomicroscopic reconstructions of viral particles. VP6, which forms a tight trimer, has two distinct domains: a distal beta-barrel domain and a proximal alpha-helical domain, which interact with the outer and inner layer of the virion, respectively. Spectroscopy of Very Hot Plasma in Non-flaring Parts of a Solar Limb Active Region: Spatial and Temporal Properties

In this work we investigate the thermal structure of an off-limb active region (AR) in various non-flaring areas, as it provides key information on the way these structures are heated. In particular, we concentrate on the very hot component (>3 MK) as it is a crucial element to distinguish between different heating mechanisms. We present an analysis using Fe and Ca emission lines from both the Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board Hinode. Discussion of connections between different phenomena observed in seemingly different situations usually helps to better understanding of the physics of underlying processes. Some time ago Farago1 discussed analogies and contrasts between light polarization and electron spin polarization.
